For this assignment I tried to interpreted new formalism as good as I can. I looked at other still life, new formalism photographers and came across some interesting and not interesting work. I’ve looked at artists like Ernst Haas, Christopher Williams, Lisa Oppenheim and Anette Kelm to name a few. What I do like about new formalism is the colourfulness. But actually, that is all I like about it. In my opinion, new formalism is to crowded, to busy. It is shouting at me, which I do not like. That’s why I tried to interpreted new formalism in a different way.
Fallen
This little serie was my first try in the studio. I have worked with a studio before but that was completely different. Anyhow, my interpretation of new formalism still life is colourful, quiet, subtle and simple. With the “fallen” serie I was trying to get a bit of weird contrasts. Using a bright red floor with an red-ish- and gold background. The flowers don’t match the background but that’s the weird contrast in it. The mug is also a huge contrast compaired to the background and floor which mades is stand out really good. I wanted to create some movement in the pictures and that’s why I let the mug “fall” over. To give it a little bit more dynamic. I know that the last two photo’s have a big blank space in the top of the picture but it could work as an advertisement.
The mug
This serie is more focused on colour contrast and simplicity. I wanted to let the colours clash with each other but with subtlety. Techniquewise I managed to put in as less shadows as possible to give the colours more contrast and look like they’re fluently go together. The colourfulness in influenced by the brand Toiletpaper Magazine. They use a lot of big contrast in colours and gives the images something cool and fun.
The chair
This idea came to me during a second studio session. During the workshop I saw this chair and I knew I had to do something with it. This series focuses more on the simplicity and quietness. No boost in contrasts no extremely bright colours. Just a white chair on a white background with a small amount of objects which are subtle and simple. Though it looks like the chair is a bit floating the photos give a calm appearance.
Study
This was experimenting with objects I use to study with. The flowers are purely for decoration. I tried to make it in to something fancy. The objects are colourfull and the compositions are fairly simple. The cropping on these photos could have been improved. I keep that in mind for a next assignment.
