During the first photography workshop we worked with continuous light, LED lights. The advantage of continuous light is that you don’t need any technical experience as you will need when you work with flashlight. You turn the light on, position it as you would like and you are ready to take photos.
We needed to photograph some objects with the LED lights. It was really hard as you get shadows you do not want. LEDs are strong lights but they aren’t very flexible to work with. I’ve done this challenge together with Vanessa. We chose to work with the fish. We were inspired by Toilet Paper Magazine. Not so much the weird photographs that are on that website, but more the photographs with the contrast of colours in them.
We wanted to create “different” photographs. Something that is weird but could work at the same time with the contrast. The light was really hard to work with but it turned out ok. I think it will get better in time when we practise more and have more time.
Something else
During the workshop another group was working with these (see photo above) attributes. I watched them and at the same time I saw this picture in my mind. I couldn’t help myself and I took this picture (sorry!) I quite like it. The different pinks stand out from the background. But because I didn’t cut out the background on the side, it gives something of a contemporary feeling.
What I’ve learned
Although I do have some experience in photography I will always learn something, which I’ve done this day. I’ve learned that these LED lights won’t get hot. So you can put all kind of material in front of the light without damaging or melting the material. And they’re also easy in use which comes in handy when you photograph products.
Mike also showed us how to create a better still life by elevating your attributes. That way it is easier to create depth and to shoot straight on your subject.
